Jan Potocki

This 5.0 zl stamp shows a caricature of Count Jan Potocki (1761-1815), wealthy Polish nobleman, soldier, ethnologist, publicist, traveler, and linguist during the Enlightenment.  He wrote The Manuscript Found in Saragosa and was the first Pole to fly in a hot-air balloon in 1790.  Tragically, he died in 1815 at his estate at Uladowka in Podolia of a self-inflicted gunshot wound with a silver bullet, believing himself to be a werewolf.
