Another in a series recognizing the flowers and fruits found in Poland, this 50 gr stamp shows the cornflower (Chaber), a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, and the genus Centaurea, consisting of 350-600 species found mainly in Europe. These thistle-like plants have flowers that are often dark blue in color, but some are also found in white, pink, and purple. They often grow as weeds in corn fields, hence the name. They have been used for medicinal purposes (as a diuretic or anti-inflammatory), as a dye, and for cosmetics.
