In this issue Dr Ed Andrews highlights the story Poland’s Crownless White Eagle in philately. In 1952, the Soviet Union created the Polish Peoples Republic, a Communist puppet state lasting to 1989. To emphasize the loss of a kingdom (and independence), the eagle’s crown was removed from images. During the period of Soviet occupation, the United States showed solidarity with Poland, issuing the Polish Millennial stamp of 1966 (Scott 1313), which depicted the Polish eagle with its crown intact. In 1989 Lech Wałęsa’s Solidarity movement brought down the Soviet regime and Poland once again had independence and a crown on its eagle
